Marilize Slabber

Psychologist

Marilize is an experienced clinical psychologist who specializes in working with victims of trauma using a range of therapeutic approaches and techniques. She is skilled at helping clients achieve some stability in their lives and uses EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to assist clients in processing traumatic memories. Research shows that EMDR is one of only a few treatment approaches that are consistently effective in treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. For this reason, its use in treating trauma is supported by agencies such as the American Psychiatric Association and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. EMDR is different from traditional ‘talking therapies’ and clients do not need to share extensive details of their abuse experience in therapy. Over the course of her career, Marilize has spent ten years working with offenders in prison and in the community. She has a special interest in working with these men to overcome traumatic past experiences and to create more rewarding lives for themselves. In addition to being registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board, Marilize is also a member of the New Zealand College of Clinical Psychologists, the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law (ANZAPPL) and EMDRNZ.
