Maureen Gibbs

Psychotherapist

Maureen, a co-director of Pain Management and Rehabilitation Services, has a master’s degree in psychology and a bachelor’s degree in psychotherapy. She is trained in the use of the Hakomi method, a type of psychotherapeutic approach that emphasizes the importance of the connection between the mind and the body. Maureen also has skills in hypnosis, biofeedback and neurofeedback and draws on these approaches when needed. Her main focus, however, is in getting to the root cause of the problem by helping clients uncover and work with the unconscious beliefs that keep them stuck in ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving that no longer serve them. Maureen works with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, relationship problems, past trauma and problems stemming from childhood abuse, work stress, and issues around self-esteem. In addition, she works with clients who struggle with weight issues and who want help with breaking old habits and changing unwanted patterns of behaviour around food. Maureen has a longstanding interest in meditation and mindfulness practices, which she incorporates in her work when appropriate. Maureen is a member of the New Zealand Psychological Society and a provisional member of The New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists
